This document will describe how to implement iTALC with SoftXpand 3 in a classroom environment.
As a result you will be able to achieve a fully functional classroom environment consisting on the 2 software(s):
- SoftXpand - version 3.0 (Any version of SoftXpand 3.0 and higher is OK)
- iTALC - version 1.0.9.
Prior to the installation – determine which computer will be used by the teacher.
Note: The iTALC teacher's console could consist of a SoftXpand workstation, or of a standalone computer. For both topologies - the implementation is similar. Set up your classroom topology according to your decision. This document refers to a topology where the iTALC teacher console is on a SoftXpand Host consisting of iTALC student clients as well.
The implementation procedure (which is described in step by step detail below) is in this order:
- Install SoftXpand on all classroom hosts.
- Install iTALC master (teacher) and store private key.
- Install iTALC client (student) and connect to teacher.
- Configure iTALC client (ICA.exe) auto start on student workstations using SoftXpand 3 run programs feature.
- Execute teacher management.
Step by step guide:
Install SoftXpand:
Note: All steps in this guide below must be performed with an administrative user.
- Install SoftXpand on all hosts in the classroom (teacher computer and student computers).
- Start SoftXpand once to make sure that all workstations are up and running.
- Exit SoftXpand and return to Windows on all hosts.
iTALC master (teacher) installation:
- Download iTALC (italc-1.0.9-bin-win32.zip) from this link: here
- On the teacher host computer run the setup.exe file.
Continue with the setup with its default values. - When prompted to select components to be installed check both these checkboxes:
iTALC client installation (ICA).
iTALC master installation (IMA). - On the next screen you will be asked to select security options.
Select the first option which is:
Create a new key-pair (do that only on master computer). - Continue the setup (with default values) until it finishes.
- During the installation of iTALC, a public key has been exported to the following directory:
C:\Documents and settings\%username%\.
Create a share to this folder so that the public key will be accessible to the student installations coming up in the next section.
iTALC client (student) installation:
- On all of the students hosts – run the setup.exe file.
Continue with the setup with its default values. - When prompted to select components to be installed check only this checkbox:
iTALC client installation (ICA). - On the next screen you will be asked to select security options.
Select the second option which is:
Import public key of master computer.
Browse to the share folder you created on step 6, and click next. - Continue with the setup (with default vales) until it finishes.
Configure iTALC client (ICA.exe) auto start on student workstations:
At this point you should have an installation directory C:\program files\ICA.
- Configure for each workstation ‘Run Programs’ – C:\program files\iTALC\ica.exe
With parameter “-ivsport 4001” (for first workstation).
So, for 4 student workstations, you would configure:
On first monitor – run programs – C:\program files\iTALC\ica.exe
With parameter: “-ivsport 4001”.
On second monitor – run programs – C:\program files\iTALC\ica.exe
With parameter: “-ivsport 4002”.
On third monitor – run programs – C:\program files\iTALC\ica.exe
With parameter: “-ivsport 4003”.
And so on.
Note: By default, the ‘Run Programs’ feature is managed globally on the Host properties.
In order to manage the ‘Run Programs’ feature individually for each workstation you need to uncheck the: “Run programs when user logon to every workstation” check box on the Host properties.
For more information refer to this link: http://www.miniframe.com/kb/onlinehelp/run-programs.html

- After configured SoftXpand run programs - ICA.exe to start automatically on each workstation start SoftXpand on the all students Host.
- For each student workstation – which runs ICA.EXE for the first time – uncheck the “always ask before opening this file”, and click run.

Execution:
At this point, you should have SoftXpand running and ICA.exe (student iTALC client) running automatically on each SoftXpand workstation.
- On the teacher's workstation run the iTALC.exe file to open the teacher's management console.
- Add all student workstations to the teacher's management console.
The students workstation defer from one another by IP and port for running ICA.exe.
See the following example on how to add students to iTALC teacher console:

Example of adding 8 iTALC clients from 2 different hosts:
Host 1:
192.168.1.11:4001
192.168.1.11:4002
192.168.1.11:4003
192.168.1.11:4004
Host 2:
192.168.1.12:4005
192.168.1.12:4006
192.168.1.12:4007
192.168.1.12:4008
In this way add all student workstations to the teacher management console (same cluster or different).
Good luck!
